The 2018 Emmy’s red carpet emulated a catwalk of some of the biggest haute couture looks  – some of which were pulled straight off the Spring 2019 New York Fashion Week runways. This red carpet event seemed different to others. Well, the carpet wasn’t red for starters, it was gold. TV stars, their guests and even the presenters were dressed to the nines, rarely shying away from big, bold looks. It’s clear to see that classic styles are still inspiring new trends, from minimalistic, textured hair to more refined, pop-art inspired chops and voluminous blow-outs. Prepare yourself for some show-stopping looks, here are our best picks from the 70th Annual Emmy Awards.

Elegant buns

The chicest looks are sometimes the simplest. We loved the comeback of elegant buns at the Emmys and reminisced of often forgotten bun-style variations. From Yara Shahid’s classic ballerina bun, Evan Rachel Wood’s dreamy low bun adorned with flowers or Emilia Clarke’s sophisticated scraped back low bun. Emilia’s ‘do was a pleasant reminder that short hair does not mean buns are off limits.  Not forgetting of course Ryan Michelle Bathe’s gorgeous braided pompadour – which may not be a ‘bun’ but is definitely worthy of its own Emmy.

Bobs are here to stay slay

Three letters you won’t see going away any time soon – b.o.b. This versatile style has so many variations it’s hard to believe they all derive from one classic look. Bobs were everywhere at the Emmys and we loved them all– but we managed to pick out a few of our favs. Scarlett Johansson’s deep side-parted bob styled with finger waves to give it a little edge complimented her iconic heart shaped face and subtle make up. Chrissy Teigen rocked her slightly wet look bob and those chiselled cheeks were framed beautifully with soft waves. Gwendoline Christie’s more ‘out there’ bob turned everyone’s heads that’s for sure – after all, it was hard to miss – uber short, curly and platinum blonde.  As much as we loved the more daring, edgier looks, we couldn’t pass up Zuri Hall’s simple curly bob. It was softer in tone and perfectly textured – a nod to a more classic style (just like our Sunkissed collection, in fact).

Textured waves

A go-to trend for so many red carpet events, the textured wave can turn you into a glamour queen or a beach babe. Mandy Moore opted for the latter with her beachy waves and peachy makeup. Natalia Dyer on the other hand simply sizzled in her glamourous face framing curls and deep side-part. If you’re after something in between then you should feel inspired by Yvonne Strahovski’s soft, textured waves with plenty of movement. Don’t forget you can style textured waves so much easier too, just take a look at Dakota Fanning’s romantic look, with loose waves in a half updo.

Pulled back

We couldn’t help but notice the number of celebs who brought their A-game with ultra-slicked back hair. Actresses like Constance Wu, Issa Rae, Thandie Newton and Tracee Ellis all opted for gorgeous glam by pulling back their tresses for a sleek look. It’s no surprise that this trend dominated the red carpet—it also took over New York Fashion Week. Our Creative Director Kieron Fowles commented:

“This year I had the pleasure of working backstage at NYFW and slicked back hair played a big part in so many looks. Gracing the catwalk at Dion Lee’s show, and continuously seen amongst the style -savvy, the slick back or ‘pulled-back’ can go with just about anything; a quick spritz for a beachy wet look or even something smart and sophisticated for the evening – it’s got it all.”
